<div style="margin-left: 40px;">This course will introduce students to recent revisions in the dependency theory/world systems theory as applied to the agency of expanding capitalism in semi-peripheral and peripheral regions, particularly drawing on examples from Central and Eastern Europe.</div>
<div style="margin-left: 40px;">The course will discuss the legitimization of political and economic transformations in peripheral regions within the framework of critical analysis of global capitalism’s expansion. It will explain how these transformation resulted in significant dispossession of land, properties, companies, and public infrastructure, predominantly by Western European and American corporations.</div>
<div style="margin-left: 40px;">This phenomenon will be interpreted as part of recurring waves of radical ownership transformations in the world’s periphery and semi-periphery, where the dispossession or acquisition of substantial shares in national assets of peripheral countries emerges as a pivotal aspect of modern capitalism, alongside exploiting domestic labor.<br />

<div class="ed_txt" style="margin-left: 40px;">從Raymond Williams專書論文`The Analysis of Culture’ 對文化的分析，探究流行文化（Popular Culture或Pop Culture），也稱為通俗文化及大眾文化，此詞約於19世紀開始使用，原指和貴族文化或菁英文化或是官方文化或是統治階級的教育及文化相對應的大眾庶民文化。現指受大眾與傳播媒體間交互影響的所產出大量工商業文化製品中所傳遞的想法、觀點、圖像等，例如：動漫、電視劇、攝影、電影、時尚、網路影集Netflix, Apple TV+等。<br />
因流行文化影響日漸擴大，從Stuart Hall and Paddy Whannel 專書論文`The Young Audience’研討年輕觀眾的角度切入，檢視現下年輕人喜動漫、很多人追劇、大眾休閒看電影，使得流行文化亦成顯學，為傳媒學者、社會學家(如史賓賽論流行與模仿，Pierre Bourdieu論品味 & 文化的貴族)、文學與文化批判學者(如羅蘭．巴特 (Roland Barthes)`Myth Today’論今日神話及流行服飾，阿多諾(Theodor W. Adorno)論流行音樂與文化工業)、女性主義與媒體研究(安琪拉．麥克蘿賓(Angela McRobbie)的書《後現代主義與流行文化》，表演研究學者研究電視戲劇與電影的互文性)等專家學者所關注。以Slavoj Zizek `From Reality to the Real’(〈從現實到真實〉)，研討教學動漫以《Yuri on Ice》所掀起突破二維平面與三維立體四維現實空間之間的虛實文化交融為例，研討動漫回射真實人生，各國如美、日、中、俄的滑冰文化，藝術再創造之互為指涉。<br />
以Stuart Hall之文`The Rediscovery of `Ideology’(〈意識形態的再發現:在媒體研究中被壓抑的返回〉)；並以Christine Geraghty論文 `Soap Opera and Utopia’(〈肥皂劇與烏托邦〉)，以及女性主義來研討電視劇，以近年與時下正夯的《後宮甄嬛傳》(76集)、《羋月傳》(81集)、《延禧攻略》(70集), Netflix Bridgerton《柏捷頓家族：名門韻事》(The First Season, 2020) (The Second Season, 2022)、《一傘煙雨》（男主角于朦朧 ）(2024)等為例。並以Jean Baudrillard's `The Precession of Simulacra,’ Elizabeth Wilson's `Fashion and Postmodernism,’ Michel de Certeau's `The Practice of Everyday Life,’ and Ien Ang's `Feminism Desire and Female Pleasure’等經典雋永文化理論，來剖析流行文化。<br />
電影則以近年流行的亞洲、亞美與歐美流行的動漫作品, 例如: Netflix科幻影集《愛，死亡+機器人》(Love, Death +Robots) (2022) . 或暢銷文學或改編賣座電影為例。例如：韓國電影《與神同行》、亞美電影《瘋狂亞洲富豪》、漫威英雄電影系列、Netflix 影集 Altered Carbon 《碳變》、熱門電影《芭比》等等來研討。<br />

This course aims to introduce students to a variety of qualitative research methods. There are two main sections in this course.<br />
The first section is the “Interacting with Humans” section, which focuses on ethnography and interview methods in which students would learn how to interact with research participants.<br />
The second section, “Engaging with Data,” explores various ways that researchers analyze text and images.<br />
Throughout the course, students will have an opportunity to read texts about each method, participate in discussions, engage in qualitative research activities/games, and share with the class their own preliminary qualitative research plan.<br />

這門課將從哲學與倫理角度出發，帶你理解各種虛擬人格的型態： 同時探討他們會引發的哲學與倫理議題。<br />
透過閱讀與討論，你將有機會思考它們如何改變我們的生活，以及在信任、身分、同意、真實性等面向上，這些技術如何挑戰我們對人的理解。<br />
The contemporary rise of what we might call “virtual persons” – made possible by advances in generative AI – poses new challenges for philosophy, ethics, and society. Virtual persons come in several forms. Deepfakes are AI-generated images, videos, or audio clips that convincingly imitate real individuals, often raising risks of deception and manipulation. Digital clones or doppelgängers are interactive systems designed to recreate a specific person’s voice, face, or style, whether during their lifetime or after their death – in the latter case, we speak of“griefbots”or “deathbots”. They require training an AI system on large amounts of person-specific data.<br />
Finally, AI companions simulate plausible conversation partners or friends, but without necessarily aiming to replicate any particular individual, offering new forms of intimacy, support, and companionship. This graduate seminar will introduce students to the philosophy and ethics of virtual people, engaging with a rapidly growing body of contemporary literature. We will examine the potential benefits of these technologies, as well as their ethical and epistemic risks. Topics include: the harms of deepfakes and their challenges to trust in testimony and media; questions of ownership, consent, and identity in the creation of digital clones; the philosophical and ethical implications of griefbots and AI companions; the role that notions of authenticity and accuracy can be expected to play in digital recreations; and the use of digital clones in healthcare or as hypothetical extensions of life. Through the course readings, discussions, and written assignments, students will gain a rigorous understanding of how these technologies challenge our concepts of personhood, autonomy, authenticity, and truth, and will be equipped to develop their own views on these emerging issues.<br />

Metaphysics is the systematic study of the fundamental nature of reality.<br />
It addresses questions about which aspects of reality are fundamental, how to understand the non-fundamental aspects of reality in terms of the fundamental ones, and how to understand various features of reality (e.g., causation, modality, and composition) in terms of these fundamental aspects of reality.<br />
One important approach in contemporary metaphysics uses the tools of analytic philosophy to formulate and address such questions.<br />
Another approach draws on the sciences in various ways to formulate and address such questions.<br />
In this course, students will learn about these approaches by reading some of the recent literature in metaphysics and discussing it with their classmates and the instructors.<br />

在課堂討論中，你不僅會接觸最新的研究成果，也會被鼓勵提出批判性的思考，檢視各種冥想實踐的可能性與侷限。<br />
This course has three objectives: 1) Inform students of contemporary meditation research and how these studies enhance our understanding of psychology, health, and self; 2) Enhance students’ ability to critically interrogate the materials during class discussions; 3) Develop a research topic on one of the primary themes and write a scholarly paper.<br />
Modern research into meditation and the self has grown rapidly over the past three decades. These studies have inspired new phenomenological, psychological, and philosophical perspectives on the self and our overall psycho-physical well-being. They also offer innovative developments in the fields of neuroscience, cognitive studies, and philosophy. Interdisciplinary research into meditation is growing, but there are no definitive answers regarding the limitations and advantages of meditative praxes. To understand a variety of theoretical and practical approaches to the philosophy and practice of meditation, we will read The Psychology of Meditation: Research and Practice (POM) edited by Michael A. West (Oxford University Press, 2016) and Waking, Dreaming, Being: Self and Consciousness in Neuroscience, Meditation, and Philosophy (WDB) by Evan Thompson (Columbia University Press, 2015).<br />

The aim of this course is to introduce students to main issues of philosophy, and to cultivate critical thinking and philosophical ways of life.<br />
Human civilization consists of the development of a variety of disciplines ranging from religion, science, medicine, law, social and political systems, and the arts. Philosophy is a unique discipline to examine the basic principles and presuppositions of these heterogeneous disciplines with an aim to both advance them forward and to better improve human wellbeing.<br />
Topics to be discussed in this course include the nature of mind, self, consciousness, language, knowledge, science, morality, death, equality, justice, free will, and God.<br />
Through reading and critically discussing some important philosophical work which deals with these topics, students will not only get a more holistic understanding place in the world, but also to better appreciate the particular discipline such as medicine and biology, science and engineering, humanity and social sciences, business and finance, agriculture and ecology, etc. in which they pursue domain-specific knowledge.<br />

This course aims to help students understand how linguistic and social issues are reflected in popular culture. Through discussion of popular movies, music, dramas, and TV shows, this course will explore how language is used to reflect social relationships, identities, and cultures in popular materials.<br />
Students will be asked to utilize linguistic and sociology concepts learned in class for discussing the pop culture examples and how the language used in pop culture reflects social and cultural issues.<br />
By learning the important issues in sociolinguistic use and integrating them into pop culture, this course will train students to apply cultural analysis to understand the relationship between language, culture, and society.<br />

透過閱讀與討論跨領域文獻，本課程將引導你深入思考自我、他者相關的哲學問題。<br />
What does it mean to be a self, and how does selfhood take shape through our relations with others?<br />
This course examines philosophical and interdisciplinary accounts of selfhood and its relation to others. We begin with foundational disputes about what the self is (if anything), then move on to how the mind is influenced or shaped by others. For example, what is it to feel self-aware in public?<br />
What is shame, and what does it reveal about the social dimension of self-evaluation, norm sensitivity, and the experience of being seen? We will also explore how various aspects of our mental lives can be shared, and in what sense they can be shared. These include attention, agency, emotion, memory, and imagination. To what extent can we do these together? Lastly, we examine we-identities and we-relationships, and what binds individuals into plural subjects. What distinguishes “I am with you” from “we are a we”? This course aims to explore these philosophical issues through interdisciplinary literature.<br />
