Exploring National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) no longer requires a trip to Taipei or Hsinchu.

From campus buildings recreated in Minecraft to panoramic tours of research facilities, the university is offering prospective students, families, alumni, and the public more ways to explore its campuses on a computer or mobile device.

For those who visit in person later, an augmented reality (AR) app adds navigation and campus stories to the experience.

NYCU’s “360° Campus × Minecraft” event connects virtual campus tours with a Minecraft treasure hunt. From September 2 to 15, 2026, participants can complete tasks across both platforms and register with their NYCU email address for a chance to win prizes.

A Campus Homecoming, One Block at a Time

In Minecraft, familiar campus landmarks take on a different form. The NYCU × Minecraft Campus Digital Reconstruction Project, developed with student participation and produced by DreamCity Studio with support from the NCTU Alumni Association, recreates the university’s Bo-Ai and Guang-Fu campuses in Hsinchu.

Gates, buildings and pathways have been rebuilt block by block, creating digital spaces that offer alumni around the world another way to return to campus. Launched to mark NYCU’s fifth anniversary and National Chiao Tung University’s 130th anniversary, the project also reaches audiences through video.

NYCU’s official YouTube channel features tours of the Guang-Fu campus and Bo-Ai campus, allowing viewers to explore their Minecraft counterparts without installing the game.

For newcomers, the videos offer an accessible introduction to the university. For students and alumni, they offer the pleasure of spotting familiar places and revisiting shared memories.

A 360-Degree Look Inside Campus Life and Research

For a view of the physical campuses, NYCU’s 360-degree virtual campus platform offers browser-based tours built from high-resolution panoramic photographs. Visitors can drag the screen to look around, zoom in to examine spaces and select information points to learn more about individual locations. The format lets users explore at their own pace, whether on a computer or a mobile device.

The platform covers the Guang-Fu and Bo-Ai campuses in Hsinchu and the Yang-Ming campus in Taipei. Alongside landmarks such as the North Gate and Haoran Library, it features research settings including the Advanced Rocket Research Center, a simulated hospital ward showcasing smart healthcare, and a biomedical engineering analysis laboratory.

For prospective students and their families, these tours offer a closer look at the university’s learning and research environments — extending a campus visit beyond its streets and buildings.

Keeping Art and Campus History Within Reach

NYCU’s online exhibition “Yuyu Yang: The Art of Limitlessness” uses 360-degree imagery to bring the artist’s work to audiences anywhere, extending access beyond the physical exhibition’s dates and location.
NYCU’s online exhibition “Yuyu Yang: The Art of Limitlessness” uses 360-degree imagery to bring the artist’s work to audiences anywhere, extending access beyond the physical exhibition’s dates and location.

The online experience also opens a window onto NYCU’s cultural life. The virtual campus platform includes links to exhibitions featuring artist Yuyu Yang, also known as Yang Ying-feng, and displays tracing the university’s development.

Among them is Yuyu Yang: The Art of Limitlessness, an exhibition preserved through 360-degree digital photography. Its online format allows audiences to encounter the artist’s work beyond the physical exhibition’s dates and location.

Together, the art and history displays offer a fuller picture of the university. First-time visitors can discover its cultural character, while alumni can revisit stories and collections they may have passed by during their student years.

AR Takes the Experience Onto Campus

When an online visit becomes an in-person trip, the NYCU AR campus guide app can help visitors find their way. The app combines GPS navigation, augmented-reality directions, and voice guidance from virtual characters. Using a phone’s camera and the visitor’s location, it adds information and visual cues to the surroundings, helping users locate destinations and learn about the campus as they walk.

According to a university update published in 2025, the app’s points of interest now cover the Yang-Ming, Guang-Fu, Bo-Ai, Lan-Yang, Tainan, and Qingpu campuses. The update also introduced recommended routes and interactive questions featuring Yuyu Yang’s sculptures, giving visitors more ways to explore campus buildings and public art according to their interests.

Together, the videos, panoramic tours and AR guides offer multiple paths into university life. Prospective students can preview their future learning environment, families can gain a closer understanding of the campus, and alumni can reconnect with familiar places — with the journey beginning on a screen, wherever they are.
