A science student finds an internship in venture capital. A transfer student explores a more flexible academic path. An online course becomes a first step into an unfamiliar subject.

At National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), these experiences illustrate how students can shape their education beyond a single major. They also offer a starting point for NYCU MIX&MATCH, a video series helping students discover what they can learn—and where to begin.

Presented by NYCU and produced by its Office of International Promotion and Outreach, the series brings together faculty, university staff and students to explain learning resources and share firsthand experiences. For high school students, undergraduates and parents, the interviews offer practical insights into cross-disciplinary study, self-directed learning and online courses.

Exploring Where Another Field Can Take You

For NYCU graduate Ya-Ti Meng, exploring a subject outside her science studies helped open the door to venture capital.

During college, Meng discovered that she enjoyed working with people and taking part in projects. That interest led her to study business and management through NYCU’s Venture & Innovation Management cross-disciplinary program. The experience later caught a supervisor’s attention, helping her secure her first internship at a venture capital firm.

In her interview, Meng also discusses balancing her major, cross-disciplinary courses and other interests. Her experience offers a concrete example of how students can explore a new direction while continuing their studies in their original field.

For viewers interested in the academic planning behind such choices, a companion interview with Director Yi-Ju Tseng explains how cross-disciplinary programs differ from double majors and minors. It covers credit requirements and course planning, helping students understand how an interest in another subject might fit into their education.

Shaping Your Own Academic Path

More freedom to choose what to study also means learning how to make those choices.

Interviews about NYCU’s Arete Honors Program explore that process from both faculty and student perspectives. Program Director Chia-Hung Dylan Tsai considers whether students need to define their interests through a major so early in their university education.

Student Hsiu-Chi Tsai offers a personal perspective, sharing the experience of transferring from electrical engineering and computer science studies at National Tsing Hua University to NYCU’s Arete Honors Program. The interview examines the self-discipline and exploration that come with greater academic freedom.

Together, these conversations encourage viewers to consider the kind of learning environment that suits them and how they might give their interests a clearer direction.

Taking the First Step With an Online Course

Students do not need to change majors or enroll in another program to begin exploring a new field. A single online course can be a starting point.

In another episode, Yung-Chia Chang, director of NYCU’s Higher Education Open Resources Research Center, and Deputy Director Kenzen Chen introduce the ewant Open Education Platform. They explain how students can access courses from different universities in subjects ranging from computing and languages to the humanities and management.

The conversation addresses practical questions, including how to choose a course and whether it may count toward a degree. Some courses may be eligible for credit recognition, subject to each university’s rules.

For students still identifying their interests, these courses offer a chance to explore a subject before deciding whether to pursue it further.

A new direction can begin with a course choice, an internship or a question about what else is possible. By connecting personal experiences with practical information, NYCU MIX&MATCH helps students explore those possibilities and identify a next step that fits their interests.
