Twenty-two cadets from the Republic of China Military Academy (ROCMA) began classes at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) on September 7, 2026, marking the launch of a dual-degree partnership designed to broaden academic opportunities for future military officers.

Introduced for the 2026–27 academic year, the program brings together military training and university education to help cadets build stronger foundations in science and technology while developing expertise across disciplines. The first cohort’s arrival moves the partnership from planning into classroom instruction.

NYCU’s “360° Campus × Minecraft” event connects virtual campus tours with a Minecraft treasure hunt. From September 2 to 15, 2026, participants can complete tasks across both platforms and register with their NYCU email address for a chance to win prizes.

Opening New Academic Pathways for Outstanding Cadets

The initiative gives selected cadets access to NYCU’s academic resources alongside their military education, leadership development and professional training. It aims to prepare them for further study and careers that increasingly require both technical knowledge and the ability to work across fields.

Selection focused primarily on first-year cadets ranked among the top 25 by admission scores and second-year cadets ranked among the top three in each academic department. Candidates also had to express an interest in pursuing the dual-degree curriculum. The inaugural group of 22 was chosen following a review of academic performance, motivation and other eligibility requirements.

Coordinating Resources to Support Student Learning

The partnership was advanced with the support of NYCU President Chi-Hung Lin and Military Academy Superintendent Tan Fang-jung. NYCU Senior Vice President Yung-Fu Chen helped coordinate teaching resources and curriculum planning, connecting the academy’s educational goals with the university’s academic offerings.

Stan Shih, chairman of the StanShih Foundation, also supported efforts to secure funding to ease the financial burden of taking courses across the two institutions, allowing participating cadets to focus more fully on their studies and professional development.

Deputy Director Shou-Sheu Lin coordinated administrative communication, course arrangements, student selection and enrollment between the institutions. That work helped turn the proposed partnership into an operational program for the new academic year.

Preparing Military Leaders for a Technology-Driven Future

Beyond expanding access to university courses, the initiative seeks to establish a sustained pathway linking military education, interdisciplinary study and continuing education.

The academy plans to deepen its collaboration with NYCU by refining curriculum alignment, academic advising and arrangements for completing degree requirements. The long-term goal is to prepare a new generation of military officers who combine leadership skills with technological literacy, interdisciplinary expertise and a commitment to lifelong learning.
