National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) has taken another step toward advancing next-generation cancer treatment and precision medicine through a new partnership with Heron Neutron Medical Corp. (HNMC). On June 29, the two organizations signed an agreement to establish the Bo’ai Campus BNCT and Advanced Imaging Research Center, creating a multidisciplinary hub that will bridge scientific discovery, translational medicine, and clinical innovation.

Building an Integrated Platform for Precision Medicine

The initiative builds on NYCU’s longstanding strengths in biomedical science, medical imaging, clinical research, and interdisciplinary engineering. By combining the university’s expertise in medical research, physician-scientist training, and translational medicine with HNMC’s capabilities in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) systems and advanced medical technologies, the new center aims to accelerate the development of innovative approaches to cancer diagnosis and treatment.

BNCT has emerged as one of the most promising forms of precision radiotherapy. The treatment works by delivering boron-containing compounds that selectively accumulate in tumor cells, then exposing them to neutron irradiation, thereby enabling highly targeted destruction of cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

As global interest in BNCT continues to grow, researchers see the technology as a potential breakthrough for treating cancers that are difficult to manage with conventional therapies.

Advanced medical imaging will be another cornerstone of the center. From early diagnosis and treatment planning to therapeutic evaluation and data-driven clinical research, imaging technologies provide the precision needed to support more personalized and effective care.

Located on NYCU’s Bo’ai Campus, the research center will integrate BNCT, medical imaging, clinical investigation, translational medicine, and cross-disciplinary innovation into a single collaborative ecosystem. The center is expected to strengthen partnerships among researchers, clinicians, and industry while cultivating future talent and expanding Taiwan’s capabilities in precision oncology, biomedical innovation, and next-generation healthcare.
