National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) has received a donation of 30,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) worth of renewable energy certificates from global networking leader Juniper Networks, marking the university’s first official integration of green energy certification into its records. The initiative highlights NYCU’s firm commitment to low-carbon operations and achieving net-zero emissions.

\r\nNYCU Pioneers Renewable Energy Integration in Campus IT Infrastructure

\r\nThe renewable energy certificates, issued by the National Renewable Energy Certification Center (T-REC) under Taiwan’s Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection, validate that electricity originates from renewable sources such as solar, wind, or hydroelectric power.
\r\n
\r\nThese certificates promote the development of renewable energy markets and enable organizations to increase their green energy usage and advance carbon reduction and corporate social responsibility goals.
\r\n
\r\nThe collaboration with Juniper Networks marks a pioneering step, with NYCU introducing renewable energy into the computing servers of its Information Technology Services Center.

\r\nAccording to the Director of Information Technology Services Center, Dr. Zen-Chung Shih, balancing high-tech development with environmental sustainability has long been considered a significant challenge.

\r\n“As a leading institution for cultivating talent in science, technology, and biomedical fields, NYCU is not only injecting renewable energy into its energy-intensive units but also demonstrating that academic institutions have a societal duty to integrate sustainability into cutting-edge research,” Shih said.

\r\nNYCU President Dr. Chi-Hung Lin emphasized that with the growing adoption of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, the energy demands of IT and network infrastructures are rapidly rising. “As hubs of innovation, universities must take the initiative in addressing energy and environmental issues,” Lin said.

\r\nOver the years, NYCU has continuously promoted campus sustainability—from upgrading energy-saving equipment and implementing energy management systems to integrating innovative technologies—embedding the spirit of sustainability into its education, research, and campus management practices.

\r\nIntegrating renewable energy certificates into the university’s green power records marks a significant milestone in NYCU’s pursuit of carbon neutrality and sustainable education.
