The structural biology team of the College of Biological Science and Technology, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) adopted the x-ray protein crystallography method to analyze the structure of the apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 (APE1)–DNA complex. The team’s goal was to understand how the APE1 protein activity in the human body is utilized by cancer cells to repair their DNA damaged by drugs, thereby developing drug resistance toward DNA-damaging anticancer drugs. In the future, if structure-based drug design can be used to block the activity of APE1, then part of the drug resistance problems of cancer cells can be resolved. A newly merged university named the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) with her foundations in the two renowned universities, National Yang-Ming University and National Chiao Tung University, celebrated her official opening today with the inauguration of the first President Professor Chi-Hong Lin MD/PhD. Two eventful ceremonies have taken place on the two main campus of NYCU: the Taipei Yang Ming campus and the Hsinchu Guang Fu campus. Dr. Chi-Hung Lin was selected as the President of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) by presidential search committee. He taught at Institute of Microbiology and Immunology in National Yang-Ming University after earning Ph.D. in Yale University. Later, he joined in Taipei City Government and New Taipei City Government as a commissioner of Department of Health during 2010 to 2018. Now he is a vice president of University System of Taiwan. The new president will be appointed by the Ministry of Education officially.
