In July, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) expanded our international cooperation efforts in Southeast Asia. NYCU hosted the 2024 Taiwan-Malaysia Semiconductor Forum in Kuala Lumpur, drawing over 100 participants from academia, industry, and students. Prominent scholars and international corporate leaders from Taiwan and Malaysia discussed the current state and future development of the semiconductor industries, governmental policies, and academic cooperation.

The NYCU delegation, led by President Chi-Hung Lin, also visited several Malaysian universities and inaugurated the Taiwan-Malaysia Overseas Science and Technology Innovation Center. Additionally, NYCU signed MOUs with Pin Hwa High School in Malaysia and Hanoi University of Science, a member of Vietnam National University (VNU-HUS), aiming to enhance international talent exchange and cultivation in alignment with Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy.

Advancing Semiconductor Collaboration in Malaysia with 2024 Forum and Strategic Partnerships

On July 10th, NYCU held the 2024 Taiwan-Malaysia Semiconductor Forum in Kuala Lumpur, the forum featured prominent scholars and international corporate leaders from Taiwan and Malaysia who shared their expertise in the semiconductor field. Key speakers included Mr. Khein-Seng Pua, the founder of Phison Electronics, Dr. Robert Li, Global Vice President of Synopsys Technology, Chairman and CEO of Synopsys Technology Taiwan Region, Dr. Lee Hing Wah from MIMOS Berhad, Dr. Shutesh Krishnan from ON Semiconductor, and Professor Harikrishnan Ramiah from Universiti Malaya.

The NYCU delegation, in addition to hosting the forum, visited the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Medicine at Universiti Malaya, the Institute of Microengineering and Nanoelectronics (IMEN) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and Monash University Malaysia (MUM). The delegation also inaugurated the Taiwan-Malaysia Overseas Science and Technology Innovation Center at Universiti Malaya and UKM, marking a new milestone in bilateral university research and cooperation.

NYCU further strengthened its international ties by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Pin Hwa High School in Klang, promoting the enrollment of talented Malaysian students at NYCU and encouraging them to work in Taiwan post-graduation, aligning with Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy to foster talent.

Malaysia, as the sixth-largest exporter in the global semiconductor industry, primarily focuses on downstream processes like packaging, assembly, and testing. The country is now striving towards higher-value sectors such as wafer fabrication and IC design. Taiwan, renowned for its advanced semiconductor technology and extensive industry experience, benefits from the educational and research capabilities of NYCU, a pivotal institution in Taiwan’s semiconductor education landscape.

Recognizing the burgeoning semiconductor industry in Vietnam, NYCU is committed to supporting Vietnam’s national development goals for the next 30 to 50 years by cultivating specialized talent. On July 8th, the NYCU delegation, with assistance from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vietnam, signed an MOU with the VNU-HUS. This MOU aims to promote Vietnamese students’ pursuit of semiconductor degrees in Taiwan.

NYCU and VNU-HUS have maintained a strong relationship since establishing the first overseas master’s program in semiconductor industry studies in 2019. The recent agreement is expected to deepen cooperation, attract more talented Vietnamese students to Taiwan, and develop internationally competitive semiconductor professionals, bolstering the industry’s growth in both nations.

The events and agreements in July underscore NYCU’s commitment to enhancing international cooperation and talent development in the semiconductor industry. By hosting forums, visiting leading universities, and signing strategic MOUs, NYCU is paving the way for a robust exchange of knowledge and expertise, fostering the next generation of semiconductor professionals, and strengthening Taiwan’s position in the global semiconductor landscape.
