National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) has set a new benchmark in technological innovation at the 2024 Taiwan Innotech Expo, securing 19 awards across various fields and leading all universities nationwide. Competing in the Expo’s prestigious “Invention Competition Area,” NYCU presented 18 cutting-edge patents, winning one Platinum, six Gold, seven Silver, three Bronze, and two Corporate Special Awards. This achievement underscores NYCU’s unparalleled research and development strength in Taiwan.

NYCU Drives Innovation Economy with Industry-Academia Co-Creation Ecosystem

This year’s Expo, “Intelligent Technology Island: The New Era of AI,” featured transformative AI applications in national defense, cybersecurity, healthcare, and net-zero initiatives. The event hosted 431 exhibitors from 20 countries and attracted over 50,000 visitors. NYCU’s impressive entries spanned medical engineering, biomedicine, organic chemistry, IT, telecommunications, optoelectronics, mechanical engineering, metrology, and electrical engineering, further solidifying the university’s reputation in fostering industry-academic partnerships.

Among the notable awards was the Platinum Prize for the “Rotary Code Disk and Method for Designing The Same,” an innovation developed by Professor Meng Ou-Yang and his team. This invention enhances the precision of servo motor positioning and control by optimizing the encoder design without altering sensor or hardware structures, providing efficient solutions for automation and related applications.
 



NYCU’s Gold-winning technologies highlighted pioneering advancements, including Professor Li-Wei Ko’s “Early Assistive Diagnosis System for ADHD” and Professor Jyh-Cheng Chen’s “Contrast Carrier Device with Geometric Calibration Phantom on Computed Tomography,” showcasing innovations in healthcare, materials science, and biotechnology. Professor Yi-Hsin Lin’s “Electrically Controllable Liquid Crystal Lens and Combined Electrically Controllable Liquid Crystal Lens,” a standout entry, also received a Corporate Special Award from Hon Hai Technology, capturing significant attention at the Expo.  (For more award details, see the link)

NYCU’s Office of Industry-Academy Cocreation emphasized the university’s mission to drive innovation in biomedicine and technology through industry partnerships. Established in February, the office is focused on building a unique, university-led ecosystem that converts research achievements into commercial value through strategic intellectual property (IP) management and the “IP Rising Star Project” to fuel global industry innovation.

NYCU’s exceptional performance at the Expo, which earned praise from Cheng-Wei Liao, Director of the Intellectual Property Office at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, has secured an invitation to compete again next year, promising to set new milestones for Taiwan’s technological landscape.
