At the 2024 National Intelligent Manufacturing Big Data Analytics Competition (IMBD 2024), National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) has again proven its prowess! The NYCU team “Arbitrary,” led by student Chun-Hsien Tsai from the Institute of Data Science and Engineering, clinched the top prize in the graduate division, earning the university national acclaim. In a testament to the power of collaboration, “About to Graduate,” a joint team of students from NYCU’s Institute of Statistics and National Taiwan University (NTU), also claimed gold in the same category, showcasing the immense potential of cross-university teamwork.

Real-World Challenges: Bridging Academia and Industry

This year’s competition followed a “corporate problem, academic solution” model, inviting businesses to contribute real-world production data for students and researchers to tackle practical challenges. Attracting 193 teams from 47 universities across Taiwan, the competition saw diverse computer science, mechanical engineering, and statistics participants come together to explore the vast possibilities of smart manufacturing and big data.

The finals were particularly demanding, featuring cutting-edge tasks like production parameter analysis and advanced image processing challenges. These innovative topics tested participants at the highest levels, highlighting the transformative potential of generative AI in smart manufacturing.

NYCU’s “Arbitrary” team, under the leadership of Chun-Hsien Tsai, showcased exceptional data analysis skills and impressed judges with innovative solutions, earning unanimous praise. Meanwhile, the joint team “About to Graduate” successfully integrated expertise from different schools and disciplines, injecting fresh perspectives into the competition and claiming another gold.
