Fresh off their first-ever University Basketball Association (UBA) basketball championship in March, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) continues its winning streak—this time on the volleyball court.
On May 11, NYCU’s men’s volleyball team delivered a stunning performance, defeating National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences (NTUNHS) with set scores of 25:16, 25:23, 15:25, and 25:19 to clinch the university’s first UVL (University Volleyball League) General Group Championship. This historic victory marks a new chapter for NYCU’s athletic program. Graduate student Kuo-Liang Chao from the Institute of Electrical and Control Engineering shone as the team’s setter and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Team Spirit and Unbreakable Willpower: The Secret Behind NYCU’s Championship Run
NYCU stormed into the match with unstoppable momentum, using powerful serves and lightning-fast spikes to disrupt their opponent’s defense, easily taking the first set 25:16. Although NTUNHS adjusted their strategy in the second set and took the offensive initiative, NYCU kept their composure, staying within one point throughout a tense back-and-forth battle. In a dramatic finish, NYCU executed a decisive 4-0 run through precise spikes and capitalized on opponent errors, sealing the critical second set at 25:23.
NTUNHS managed to hold off NYCU in the third set. Still, NYCU’s superior stamina and relentless attacks overwhelmed their rivals in the fourth, closing out the final set 25:19 and lifting their first-ever UVL championship trophy.
“This team was ready!” said Head Coach Chen-Hsing Chang. He attributed the victory to years of rigorous training and the development of team chemistry, believing the players had long possessed the skills to win a General Group title. The final challenge, he emphasized, was overcoming psychological barriers and maintaining composure under pressure. On the eve of the final, the coaching staff shared strategic insights with the players and instilled a powerful message: “Trust your teammates. Trust the team.”
Coach Chang also highlighted that this year marked the first time players from both NYCU campuses united under one team. He expressed his gratitude to the players for their dedication, sacrificing their limited free time to train and fight for a common goal—achieving the best performance in school history.

MVP Kuo-Liang Chao’s Final Stand: A Champion’s Journey of Growth and Redemption
MVP Kuo-Liang Chao, who has been with the team for seven years, originally planned to retire after the Mei-Chu Games in February but was encouraged to stay and compete in the UVL. With two years of experience in the more competitive Open Group—playing alongside and against top-tier student-athletes and even national team players—Chao noted that the experience significantly improved his skills, fitness, and mindset.
As NYCU’s General Group team advanced to the finals for the first time, Chao reminded himself to “enjoy the game,” which helped him stay relaxed and play with greater boldness and creativity.
“This championship is the result of years of hard work and perseverance,” Coach Chang said after the win. “The players showed unwavering belief and incredible resilience on the court. This honor belongs to every single member of the team.” He also promised that the team will continue pushing forward, aiming for even greater achievements in future competitions.
Winning the UVL and UBA championships this year not only rewrites the university’s athletic history but also stands as a testament to the dedication and passion of young student-athletes. It sends a powerful message to all students who love sports: pursuing an extraordinary college life doesn’t require sacrifice—it’s about striving for excellence and making unforgettable memories.
