Under the auspices of the TSMC Charity Foundation, the Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH) and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) have championed the “Smart Healthy Longevity Community” model at Guandu Hospital over the past decade. This innovative model will now be established and promoted long-term in Kumamoto, Japan.
On July 17, TSMC Charity Foundation Chairperson Sophie Chang, NYCU President Chi-Hung Lin, and Guandu Hospital Superintendent Liang-Kung Chen visited Kikuyo Town, home to TSMC’s Kumamoto plant. They met with experts from Kumamoto University and the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology (NCGG) to discuss community care and share the successes of Taiwan’s geriatric medicine through university-industry collaboration. On July 18, led by the President of Kumamoto University, a visit was made to JASM Kumamoto Wafer Plant in Kikuyo Town for a community inspection.
TSMC Charity Foundation Presents “Triangle Model” for Community Care
During the two-day seminar, TSMC Charity Foundation CEO Brad Peng shared the “Triangle Model” for healthy longevity. The triangle consists of businesses, hospitals, and communities. By integrating resources from corporate volunteers and medical institutions to jointly care for the community, this model not only provides resources to hospitals and enhances community care capacity but also allows corporate employees to gain a sense of value through volunteer service.

For instance, NYCU has established senior fitness clubs in Taiwanese communities, guided by Guandu Hospital’s expertise, bringing in professional trainers and anti-aging strength training equipment. The TSMC Charity Foundation mobilizes long-term care volunteers to serve these clubs, fostering a community atmosphere that aims to delay aging and disability.

Guandu Hospital Superintendent Liang-Kung Chen further shared the hospital’s role in the TSMC Charity Foundation model and exchanged insights on Taiwan’s geriatric care with Japanese counterparts.
Kazuya Yamagata, Director of the Center for Longevity and Metabolic Regulation at Kumamoto University, discussed Japan’s aging population and the successful community care systems in Kumamoto Prefecture, which boasts over 2,000 centenarians.
NYCU Continues to Promote Smart, Healthy Communities
Liang-Kung Chen emphasized that the TSMC Charity Foundation has been a steadfast supporter throughout the nearly decade-long efforts by TVGH and NYCU. At a geriatric medicine seminar hosted by TVGH and NYCU in April, the “Triangle Model” presented by the TSMC Charity Foundation received high praise from Hidenori Arai, President of the NCGG in Japan. Intensive discussions led to the finalization of this collaboration.
This cooperation marks a significant step forward in deepening Taiwan-Japan relations in the realm of smart, healthy, and livable communities for longevity. As the “Smart Healthy Longevity Community” model is promoted in Kumamoto, NYCU will continue to leverage the resources of the TSMC Charity Foundation to jointly build intelligent and healthy livable cities.
