In addition to semiconductors, Taiwan’s outstanding performance in the photonics field has also attracted a delegation from the United States to come and study the latest photonic display technology. The US delegation includes six professors and twelve graduate students in related fields of photonics from Pennsylvania State University and the University of Dayton. They were in Taiwan to participate in a short-term training camp organized by the Department of Photonics at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), learning alongside local faculty and students. The delegation also visited leading domestic companies in display and photonics technologies.

Taiwan-US Display Technology Exchange Deepens International Cooperation and Fosters Innovation

This study exchange is in its second year and is directly sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Last year, it was held at National Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech), and this year, it is hosted by NYCU.

The study program includes core courses on display technology, hands-on laboratory work, project competitions, and corporate visits. It also features an online lecture by the Director of Google XR Hardware and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) President. Last week, the delegation visited companies such as Innolux Corporation, E Ink Holdings, and GIS-KY, gaining insights into innovative technologies and applications like Micro LED, augmented and virtual reality, and electrophoretic electronic paper display technology. These on-site corporate visits are expected to deepen future academic and industrial international cooperation between Taiwan and the United States.

NYCU Assists in Training International Talent, Boosting Taiwan’s Global Standing

Fang-Chung Chen, Chair of the Department of Photonics at NYCU, which organized this study camp and industry-academia exchange, stated that NSF of the United States only subsidizes exchanges with institutions that possess globally leading technologies. Taiwan boasts a strong display industry and research and development capabilities. At the same time, NYCU has over forty years of expertise in photonics and top-tier academic performance in advanced display technology. These factors are key to hosting this event.

This study camp facilitates academic exchanges between Taiwanese and American faculty and students and provides an in-depth understanding of the development of Taiwan’s display industry. It showcases Taiwan’s research and industry strengths in photonic displays.

NYCU plays a crucial role in training international talent and enhancing Taiwan’s global standing. The event highlights NYCU’s commitment to fostering international cooperation and innovation, further solidifying Taiwan’s position as a leader in advanced display technology.
